How to feed Russel Rabbit Tasty Mix

Mixes are diets that contain a variety of components. When used appropriately and fed in the correct way, they can provide:

  • A variety of food types, providing fun, interest and enjoyment
  • The opportunity to forage, promoting natural behaviours
  • A range of textures, sizes and shapes for a variety of chewing experiences

Because mixes contain different ingredients with different flavours, there is an increased risk of selective feeding, where rabbits eat only the tastier ingredients and leave others behind. This can cause nutrient imbalances and long‑term health problems, especially if food bowls are frequently “topped up” and hay intake is low. For this reason, a uniform nugget diet can provide a more suitable option.

If you choose to feed a mix as your rabbits’ main food, it is important to follow the feeding guidance and to monitor how your rabbits eat.

You should feed your rabbits 25 grams of Russel Rabbit Tasty Mix per kilogram of body weight per day, split into two meals. For example, an average‑sized rabbit weighing 2.5 kg will need around 60–70 grams of Russel Rabbit Tasty Mix per day. A small handful of appropriate fresh leafy green vegetables should also be provided, along with free access to unlimited quantities of good‑quality fresh hay (such as Russel Rabbit Tasty Hay or Science Selective Timothy Hay) and fresh, clean drinking water every day.

Selective feeding and how to reduce the risk

Selective feeding can be an issue with muesli mix‑style diets, and it is essential that you carefully measure your rabbit’s daily portion of food and do not refill the bowl until the full ration has been eaten. Typically, the pellet portion is left in favour of tastier ingredients. If the bowl is topped up before your rabbit has finished their complete daily ration, this increases the risk of nutrient imbalances, which in turn can lead to health issues.

All Supreme’s Tiny Friends Farm mixes contain tasty, extruded nuggets rather than less palatable, cold‑pressed pellets, to help equalise palatability across the mix and reduce the likelihood that rabbits will pick and choose. Our mixes are also formulated to provide all the balanced vitamins and minerals rabbits need, so that, when fed in the correct amounts alongside unlimited fresh hay, they act as a nutritional balancer to support overall health.

When to switch to nuggets

Despite these measures, some rabbits will still selectively feed from a mix. If your rabbits are regularly picking out certain ingredients and do not finish everything in their bowl, we recommend that you switch to a nugget-style diet.

In this case, you should gradually transition the muesli-mix portion of their diet to a uniform nugget food, such as Russel Rabbit Tasty Nuggets or one of our many Science Selective Rabbit Foods. Feeding a nugget‑only diet:

  • Helps prevent selective feeding
  • Helps ensure a consistent intake of all essential nutrients
  • Helps support long‑term dental, digestive and weight management

Whichever food you choose, the most important part of your rabbit’s diet should always be free access to unlimited good‑quality hay, supplemented with a carefully measured daily portion of food, and a small handful of suitable leafy greens.

Rabbits are supposed to have pellet food as muesli can cause selective feeding. Corn and flaked peas etc can cause gut issues. Find it extremely concerning that you still offer this food when you have the science selective

Response from Supreme Petfoods

Many thanks for your feedback. We agree that selective feeding is a concern. Unlike traditional muesli with less palatable cold-pressed pellets which may lead to imbalances, Russel Rabbit Tasty Mix includes nuggets to help ensure every component is equally palatable.

We also stress that hay should be most of a rabbit’s diet, with free access to fresh hay and a handful of leafy greens each day. Any food, including nuggets, can cause issues if fed incorrectly or in excess.

Our Russel Rabbit Tasty Mix contains Timothy hay, alfalfa, and prebiotics to help support digestive health, with no added sugars and a balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio.

Manufactured in a vegetarian environment, our products are free from meat contamination.

For selective feeding concerns, we recommend Russel Rabbit Tasty Nuggets or any of our Science Selective Rabbit Foods.

The rabbits love these however I’m really disappointed that a pet food manufacturer is packaging these in none recyclable packaging. What a shame? Can the packaging be changed please. Thanks.
